LARGO, Md.— Prince George's Community College students perform the 50-year-old play, A Raisin in the Sun by Lorraine Hansberry, the first drama written by an African-American woman and produced on Broadway. Show times are Nov. 12-15 and Nov. 19-22 in Queen Anne Fine Arts building, Hallam Theater. All performances are at 7:30 p.m. except Nov. 12, which is at 3:30 p.m.
“The high-caliber acting exemplifies the dedication of Prince George’s Community College students, staff and community members. A Raisin in the Sun is the second award-winning Broadway play performed by PGCC students this season,” said Gina Alvarado-Otero, interim theatre program director. “The shinning talent of this amazing cast is moving and revealing in their portrayal of the Younger family,” she added.
While the play focuses on the struggles of an African-American family in 1950s Chicago, the story is as appealing now as it was then. Hope, racism, feminism and pride are all themes that resonant in today’s society, just as it did then. The Younger family is chasing the American dream of a better life, but is met with challenges along the way.
Admission is free for Prince George's Community College students and employees with college ID, $10 for general admission and $5 for senior citizens and other students who do not attend PGCC. For more information, call 301-322-0920 or send an e-mail to theatre@pgcc.edu.
