LARGO, Md.— Celebrate International Education Week 2009 at Prince George's Community College. International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that prepares Americans for a global environment.
“A number of students have said that International Education Week gives them a sense of belonging at Prince George's Community College,” said Marlene Cohen, coordinator of the International Education Center and professor of communication. “Students show pride when given the opportunity to educate and share their cultures with others,” she added.
A series of activities are planned Nov. 2-7 including open discussions, information sessions, documentary films, a British debate, indoor soccer game and cultural celebrations.
• Students will proudly wave their international flag as they march in the Parade of Flags, Monday, Nov. 2, 10-11 a.m. beginning at Largo Student Center, Rennie Forum.
• Enjoy cultural foods, music and dance at the Global Café, Monday, Nov. 2, 11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Largo Student Center, Community Rooms A and B and Tuesday, Nov. 3, 5-7 p.m., Largo Student Center, Student Lounge.
• Kick off International Education Week at a Joint Proclamation ceremony, sponsored by the International Populations Network of Prince George's County, Monday, Nov. 2, 6-8 p.m., Community College Room C.
• Join an audience discussion on “Yes He Did: One Year Later, Reflection on the Obama Election,” Tuesday, Nov. 3, 2-3 p.m., Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. Share views of events leading up to and through last year’s historic election.
• Shukoor Ahmed, founder of V-Empower Inc., presents International Business Opportunities, Tuesday, Nov. 3, 4-5 p.m., Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. Discover the benefits of starting a global business.
• Attend Cultural Aspects of End of Life Care with Dorotea Gonzales, liaison for Capital Hospice, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 11:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., Lanham Hall Room 332. Discover how cultural factors strongly influence patients' reactions to serious illnesses and decisions about end-of-life care.
• Examine Learning Our Viewpoints - Dating in Different Cultures, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 1-2 p.m. and Thursday, Nov. 5, 2-3 p.m., Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. Students discuss how culture affects dating rules.
• Celebrate History of Caribbean Languages and Music, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2-3 p.m., Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. Discover and listen to various stories, music, literature and poetry from students of the Caribbean.
• Participate in Taking Root, a documentary film on Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Wangari Maathai, followed by a discussion, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 3-5 p.m., Largo Student Center, Rennie Forum.
• Learn about support services during Addressing Global Violence against Women, Thursday, Nov. 5, 11 a.m.-noon, Largo Student Center, Conference Room 2. Victims and friends of the abused receive information for shelter, food, clothing, financial assistance, protection orders and counseling.
• Dance your way through Speed Tango Lessons, Thursday, Nov. 5, 2-3 p.m., Marlboro Hall, outside Room 1076. Professor Myrna Meeroff will teach participants basic steps of the tango.
